In a bold move, Lazer Helmets has equalized the men’s and women’s prize purse at CrossVegas, the largest cyclocross race in North America. Due to regulations in cycling, Women’s prize purses in cycling are typically a small percentage of the men’s.
The race, held during Interbike, is slated for Wednesday, 18 September 2013 in the dark.
“They’ve [Lazer] been a long time partner of the race and for 2013 they’ve found a way to expand their role in a very positive way,” states CrossVegas race director Brook Watts.
“As a Belgian company Lazer has had a long affinity and association with cyclocross as it is one of our “home sports,” says Lazer Head Helmeteer Sean van Waes. “We are very happy to see cyclocross continue to grow in the United States and value our opportunity to help make this happen by supporting CrossVegas.”
Lazer is a known supporter of women’s racing and sponsors Lotto-Belisol, Cipollini-Giordana, Wiggle-Honda, Topsport-Vlaanderen, Telenet-Fidea, Optum Pro Cycling and the Crank Brothers Race Club.
Amy Dombroski (USA/Telenet-Fidea) commented by saying, “Thank you to my long time sponsor Lazer for stepping up at the biggest race in America, CrossVegas and providing equal prize money to women and men. American cycling is making massive strides in a fight for equality, and I can only hope the rest of the cycling world can see the value in this.”
Among events offering equal prize money to women and men are Epic Rides’ Whiskey Off Road and Grand Junction Off Road.
CrossVegas is a UCI Elite (International Cycling Union) Cyclocross race drawing in hundreds of Elite racers from around the World. The race is held during Interbike, the Bicycle Industry’s trade show in Las Vegas. For more information visit CrossVegas.
