Queens of Cross :: Tough Girls Lead Women’s Cycling Promotion

Colorado’s Tough Girl Cycling will host the first annual Queens of Cross in this weekend. The 2011 Queens of Cross event was created to ease the entry into the world of cyclocross racing. Cyclocross has increased in popularity in the US over the past 2 years, and for some it has become the sole focus of their cycling careers. For many Cyclocross offers a day of family fun filled with short, spectator friendly races.

Although fun to watch, and perhaps inspiring, the sport of Cyclocross can be intimidating for neophytes, which is why the 21 woman Tough Girl Cycling team decided to produce the Queens of Cross event.

“It is overwhelming for beginners to be out on the course with big hitters like Georgia Gould, Katie Comptom, and Amy Dombroski with fear of being lapped multiple times or being in the way, ” says Tough Girls founder, Lynn Bush. “The goal of Queens of Cross is to bring emphasis to the women’s categories and allow them the space to race their own event.”

In addition there is a women’s first time racer category. Lynn just wants “everyone to have fun in a friendly environment and get the taste of cyclocross racing they have always wanted to try.”

Not to be left out, men have their own special contest alongside the women. Men are encouraged to come dressed in Drag to lighten the mood– and aim for the prize for best Drag costume.

For first time women, the fee to race is only $15. 12 women are pre-registered for the first time race.

The winner of each Senior Women’s class will receive a “Queen of Cross” Jersey.

Tough Girl member Lisa Strong of Fresh Paint Murals is sponsoring the women’s Pro field to ensure equal prize money for men and women– a rare occurrence in cycling.

Happy Coffee, a local coffee shop in Denver with a drive up window for bikes, is partnering with Tough Girls to run the event.
