Over the Hump: Tuesday Night Racing is Back in the OC!
MOUNTAIN BIKE RACING SERIES RETURNS TO ORANGE COUNTY
Irvine, California. The popular Over the Hump mountain bike racing series, presented by Verizon, kicks off the season on May 25th. Over the Hump debuted last summer, with two sold out events, and now the series returns to Irvine Lake for an entire summer of mid-week racing. The inaugural 2009 season saw professional racers, casual enthusiasts and first time racers, along with a swarm of family involvement. 400 spectators found the race a unique experience, as the figure 8 course passes by the Start/Finish area 3 times each lap. Orange County is home to many key mountain bike companies, and enthusiasts have been waiting for an event like Over the Hump.
Over the Hump Mountain Bike Race Series is a fun, relaxed event for everyone. The race course has been designed to challenge all levels of riders, and give riders a great place to experience the fun and excitement of mountain bike racing. The beautiful race course offers a variety of scenic terrain with views of Irvine Lake and Santa Ana Mountain Range. Riders will wrap through various terrain, from fire road above the lake surrounded by pine trees to single track along the cottonwoods. Season Opener: Tuesday, May 25th (11 Tuesdays to follow, see website for exact schedule)
Location: Irvine Lake, CA
Times: 4pm registration, Racing starts at 6pm
Course: Approx four mile loop throughout the Irvine Lake Area. Course consists of a mix of singletrack and fire roads. Climbs and various obstacles throughout. Number of laps vary by classes. Beginner [2 laps], Sport [3 laps], Expert [4 laps]
Matt Wenger one of the event organizers said, “We’ve been excited about the series all year! We knew the mountain bike scene was huge in Orange County, but we were blown away with the response we had for a first time race. Everyone really liked the vibe; it was competitive, but fun and laidback at the same time. Seeing the family involvement was awesome. There were almost 1000 people on the side of the lake cheering for friends and family. With twelve events this year, there are a lot of racers that want to win the series championship.”
The event is presented by Verizon and sponsored by H2O Overdrive , Specialized, Oakley, SDG Components, Crank Brothers, Two Brothers Racing and Silver Sage Advisors. Local supporting dealers are: Bike Religion, Jax Bicycle Center, Rock n’ Road Cyclery, The Path Bike Shop and Surf City Cyclery.

- Course distance: 3.75miles.
- Elevation gain per lap: 350+ feet Vertical
- Beginner Course: 2 laps (7.5 miles, 700+ vertical)
- Sport Course: 3 laps (11 miles, 1,050+ vertical)
- Expert Course: 4 laps (14.5 miles, 1,400+ vertical)
